Common questions

Why do I need a will?

A will lets you choose who receives your property, who manages your estate and who would care for your minor children. Without one, the law decides for you.

What happens if someone dies without a will in Alberta?

Their estate is distributed under the intestacy rules in Alberta's Wills and Succession Act, which set out which relatives inherit and in what shares. A court-appointed administrator handles the estate.

What is the difference between a power of attorney and a personal directive?

An enduring power of attorney appoints someone to manage your finances if you cannot. A personal directive appoints someone to make personal and health-care decisions for you.
