Common questions
What is civil litigation?
It is the process of resolving a legal dispute between people or businesses through the courts — for example over a contract, money owed, property or employment. It is separate from criminal matters.
Which court will my case be in?
Smaller claims are usually heard in the civil division of the Alberta Court of Justice; larger and more complex claims go to the Court of King's Bench of Alberta. We will advise which is right for your case.
How long does a lawsuit take?
It depends on the complexity of the case, the court's schedule and whether the parties settle. Many disputes resolve within months through negotiation; cases that go to trial can take considerably longer.
